Gothenburg’s center is entirely walkable and its transit system is effortlessly integrated with the wild outdoors. I simply traveled to Stenpiren , the city’s busy waterfront transit hub and boarded a Västtrafik commuter ferry directly out to the car-free Southern Archipelago.

Without the anxiety of renting a car or the high cost of booking a guided tour, I could leave the city streets and reach peaceful islands surrounded by rocky coastline. It wasn’t a complicated day trip; it was just a regular part of the local public transit system.

Stockholm: A Foodie’s Playground

Stockholm offers immense variety, from experimental street food to grand hotel restaurants. On a Nordic food tour, my absolute favorite stop was Haqet Swedish Street Food in Södermalm, where I braved a tunnbrödsrulle—a gloriously messy and delicious flatbread roll stuffed with sausage, mashed potatoes and shrimp salad.

For more classic meals, I ordered traditional meatballs with lingonberries at Långa Raden (inside Hotel Skeppsholmen) and perfectly prepared local white fish at Brasserie Astrid in Slussen.

In Gothenburg’s Southern Archipelago, city noise disappears completely. Within an hour of leaving my hotel, I was cycling around the quiet paths of Styrsö and sea kayaking out from the docks of Donsö . The transition from urban center to rugged coastlines, sea and sky is completely frictionless.

If your perfect solo trip involves a packed checklist of world-class museums, grand palaces, military bases turned into beautiful hotels (like the Hotel Skeppsholmen) and deep history, Stockholm is the undisputed winner.

I spent days wandering the cobblestone lanes of Gamla Stan (Old Town) and exploring Djurgården , Stockholm’s museum-packed island. Standing inside the Vasa Museum looking up at a remarkably preserved 17th-century warship was breathtaking. I also explored local traditions at the Nordic Museum and traded history for pure pop fun at ABBA The Museum.

I even timed my trip to experience Midsummer at Skansen, watching families in flower crowns dance around the maypole to folk musicians.

By contrast, I experienced Gothenburg differently. Instead of rushing through a checklist of must-see sights, I found myself slowing down, wandering the historic wooden buildings of the Haga neighborhood, sitting by the canals and letting the city come to me.

Furthermore, many of my absolute favorite Gothenburg experiences—like walking the coastal paths of Vrångö or sitting by the flower-covered heart at Lejontrappan —cost absolutely nothing.
